About Us!

All About Us Smarties

Dear Smarties:

To introduce you to each other, and to get you connected on the blogsite, please click on the “comments” link below this post, and tell us a little about yourself. If you have your own blog, you can include that link if you want.

I’ll start. My name is Ted Pease. I am ancient (55 years old!), and have taught at Utah State for 17+ years. Impossible! When I came to Utah, I expected the stay about three years and then go somewhere else. There’s a life-lesson there, I think.

I was department head in JCOM for 11 years, and then stepped back into the faculty and let someone else do it in 2005. But then that guy left for another university, so I’m department head again. It’s not as cool and exotic and powerful as it sounds. You know that stuff that hits the fan? I’m the fan. Before starting my teaching career, I was a newspaper and magazine reporter in various places, including Little Rock, Ark., where I knew Bill Clinton (not the same way Gennifer Flowers did!) when he was governor.

What else? I bought a Hyrum Reservoir ski boat a couple of years ago and dragged it over to our place in northern California, where it now has a second life as a salmon-fishing boat. It’s a much happier boat.

I’m married to Dr. Brenda Cooper, who’s also in the JCOM Department and director of the Women & Gender Studies Program. We have kids, but they’re grown and gone. We prefer our dogs. Click here. And here. And here for Stoopid Pet Tricks.

As you can see, I also like to take photos.

The craziest thing I ever did: So many to choose from.... When I was 19, I rode a bicycle from Seattle to Atlanta. I haven't liked riding bikes much ever since.

That’s enough. If you REALLY want to know more, here’s some more at this link.

And a more formal one here: Pease Bio.

And more than ANYONE could POSSIBLY want to know here.

So add your deep, dark secrets in the comments box below. If you want to post a photo and can’t include it, send me a jpg and I’ll add it.

  1. Hello to one and all. It looks like I'm the unfortunate one to post first. My name is Steven Phillips. I am currently a sophomore and I have just been admitted into the JCOMM department. We'll see where I end up, but for now Public Relations seems to be the area of study that suits me best.
I just hit the five year marrige mark and I have two very energetic children.
I'm excited for another semester because that means I'm in the process of becoming one more semester closer to being done with school. I cannot wait to move on to bigger and better things.

  2. Hey everyone! I’m Chelsea and I was born and raised in Utah. I recently moved back to my hometown, Brigham City, from Harrisville and I'm pleasantly surprised at the comfort I feel being back. I’m a spontaneous twenty year old who can’t seem to be content with the norm. I adore change and I’m constantly finding new things I want to try and conquer. As for right now I’m majoring in Communication in hopes of being a PR Director, but that could change as I’ve also tried my hand at Cosmetology, Business, and Pharmacy. I'm extremely opinionated and I get my jollies out of a good debate. I've always thought I was given two hearts combined into one because of the amount of love and empathy I have for people. I'm extremely loyal and stick up for the ones I love and the views I have. I love the warm weather and I can't think of any better way to spend your time than laying on a beach with a boat and a wave runner close by. I'm an intelligent, but love to play up to the "dumb blonde" stigma; people are so shocked that blondes actually have a brain and intellect. I'm the biggest spaz I've ever met, and one weird thing I've done is kick myself in the head; not on purpose, my leg is just a little more limber than I had thought. I'm anxious to learn in this class and I look forward to reading who else I'm in class with!

  3. Hey everyone! My name is Cami and I'm from Ohio. I know you don't really want to know my life history so I'll tell you this...You have a good chance at seeing me around campus as I work for The Statesman, I work at the writing center, I work as an RA on campus, and I am an officer in the e-Club (Entrepreneurs Club). So, if I don't know who you are but you know who I am, say hi! I'd love to talk to any of you and find some other people who like to analyze the media!

  4. Hi all!! First off, my name is Eric and I'm *momentarily* totally and absolutely UNDECLARED. I have a few things I'm thinking about, but I'd rather hang tight and take classes that apply to multiple fields for a few semesters. I'm a sophomore in school, a 3x Prestige in Call of Duty, a full time worker for a major telecommunications company, a full time student, a full time husband, and come December 6, a double-full time (is that possible?) peppep. I came to enjoy online courses last semester, and my wife seems to keep me very disciplined so I'm not allowed to do poorly. As far as the media is concerned, my opinion can be heard by pretty much anyone on Fox News. Lastly, I'd like to thank Al Gore for the wonderful tool he gave us to take these classes and learn from each other/Pease.
    Here's to a good semester!!

  5. Insert generic greeting here.. My name is Rebecca Holliday. I'm from Southern California and I never thought I'd end up in Utah. But here I am! Why? I compete for the Utah State Gymnastics team. You all should definately come watch a meet sometime, I think you'd be wildly entertained. I'm a junior this year, and I plan to major in journalism with a minor in interior design. When I'm not in the gym, I'm probably freezing my butt off. I guess two years just isn't enough to get used to the lovely Logan winter, although I do enjoy the occasional snowboarding trip when my psychotic schedule allows. I'm pretty excited for this class and this year. Good luck to all.

  6. Hey everyone! I'm Annika Jones. I'm 22 and a junior. I came to USU four years ago. After two years of school, I took a break. I didn't know what I wanted to do, and basically was more worried about having fun, dating lots of boys, and staying out all night than learning at school. So now I'm back. One wedding and a nine month old baby later. This time around I'm in for the long haul. I'm majoring in journalism. Can't wait to learn a lot in this class!

  7. My name is Karen Hurd. My husband and I discovered that simply being named Hurd does not get you into THE Hurd for free... Well, I've jumped around between majors for a while, this is my fourth attempt. I started as a math and statistics composite education major and upon discovering that wasn't for me began exploring sociology, anthropology, and now journalism. I have finally (after 4 years of searching) changed my major from math to journalism!

  8. Hello! My name is Romina Nedakovic and I am 20 years old. I'm originally from Icici, Croatia but my family now resides in Park City. We came to the states in 1996 with a green card and moved around a few times to places such as, California, Louisiana, and Texas before settling in Salt Lake City in 1998. I am proud to say we are american citizens now. :) I am a transfer student from BYU... I know, I know, Cougar Town. I went there the past 2 years playing tennis for them but unfortunately I became very unhappy my sophomore year and decided to transfer. I had a fun experience my freshman year but my coach shockingly quit and so my sophomore year was a wreck. It was a hard decision but I'm already happy here in Logan and I'm excited for a new start. Go Aggies!!!

  9. Well, my name is Elise. (Yes, like the Lotus. Yes, like the Beethoven song.) I'm a Utah native, I've changed my major 5 some odd times, and now I've found a happy home in the JCOM department, namely PR.
I like pina coladas, blogging, The Big Bang Theory, and anything design-y. I love photography, I do a fair amount of freelance photog. and desktop publishing.
I'm 22 and happy to be alive. My claim to fame can be found here:

  11. Hello! I am Kailee Garcia. I've lived in Utah my whole life. This is my second year here at USU. I thought I wanted to be an interior designer but, after a year in the Design Program, I’ve decided I want to pursue a career as a wedding planner so now I plan to major in public resources and am very excited to be starting here in JCOM 2010.

  13. Hi there, I'm Stacey Griffiths. I was born and raised in good old Logan. It seems like I have been at USU forever. I was originally going to get my major in Interior Design, but that didn't work out so well for me. So now I am going into PR and I'm pretty excited about it! Hopefully I can be done with school before I'm 80.

  15. Hey, I'm Nicole Murray. I am a Junior at USU and just barely decided to switch my major to PR. This semester I will be working at Trade Secret and Best Buy, interning at the Riverwoods Conference Center, and attempting full time school online. :/ Wish me luck!! I am pursuing a career as an Event Coordinator (primarily for weddings), and I am very excited to get started!

  16. Hello, my name is Kennedy Speirs. I was born and raised in Layton Utah. As odd as it is, there is a rural part of Layton most people don't know about. Hill Air Force Base was built in the 80's and didn't allow any more houses to be built under it's flight path, so now my neighbors and I remained farmers. I just recently got married, a little over four weeks ago to be exact. She is amazing and I love being married. You might say this is due to premarital abstinence, but thats only 75% of it. I love ice hockey, and I am a goalie. I am studying at Utah State in the Agriculture Communications and I love it. I thought about posting some of my crazier mishaps, but to keep love alive in the home, I have chosen to omit such a post.

  17. Hello everyone I'm Josh Whitney! I have lived in Logan, Utah for most of my life. I really love the outdoors, especially when it comes to skiing! I guess that is why I can't get myself to leave Utah. I love it here! I'm looking forward to this class and interacting with everyone!

  18. Hello, everyone - my name is Joy Brisighella and I'm a transplant to Utah from Colorado. I'm a minority here: a liberal democrat. I'm a re-entry student, finishing my degree after taking a break for a career in the printing/ PR/marketing industry. Stuff about me: I love food and am married to a fabulous Italian man who loves to cook; I collect historical beads; I'm a compulsive proofreader. In my spare time I organize events for a variety of non-profits including Summerfest Arts Faire and the Ogden Ice Sheet. I was the Marketing Director for the Eccles Ice Center for four years and created their Chef Cookoff and Auction event, Spice on Ice. I'm starting my third year now as Conference and Events Coordinator for The Shingo Prize at USU.

  19. Hi, I'm Zack Anderson, I am a sophomore in Political Science, doing a minor in Broadcast Journalism. I'm from Logan, and i love reading, watching movies, and listening to music. I'm a huge media consumer one could say. I love spending time with my friends. Some interesting things about me, I have almost dies at least 4 times, a few from almost drowning, and from cancer. I currently work at USU, and I want to be a cameraman/news anchor when I grow up.

  20. Hey everyone!!! My name is Breck Perkins. I grew up in a small farming town in Idaho called Grace. If you've ever been there, I'm sorry. I was thrilled when I graduated high school and moved to the big city... aka Logan. I am currently in my Junior year and have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I originally chose business as my major because, well, isn't that what everyone decides to do when they're clueless? To be honest though, I just don't LOVE it. I want a career where I am excited about what I do each day. I've always been fascinated by journalism and am taking this class to decide if I LOVE it. As for now, I'm currently managing Pac Sun in the good ol' Cache Valley Mall. If you shop there, you've probably met me. I'm the short, loud, blonde girl. :D I'm super excited for this class. Good luck to all!!!
